                         ULSTER U.19 CAMOGIE FINALISTS

St Patrick’s    Dungiven        St. Louis   Kilkeel

          0:1                                      1: 6

Casement Park Belfast was the venue for the Ulster Colleges Camogie final. Despite a superb display by the team St Patrick’s failed in their bid to become champions of Ulster. St Louis lost in the final of this competition last year and the experience gained was a major factor in the victory for the team from Co Down.

From the start it was clear that this was to be a titanic battle. St. Patrick’s were quick to settle and scored first with a free from O. Mullan in full forward after a foul on C. Lynch. The young forward line, N. Mullan, A. Crossan, B, Hogan and L. Hasson  battled hard against a strong full back line from Kilkeel but failed to score.

Kilkeel responded with three pointed frees and one from play to go in at half time leading by 3 points.

The midfield pairing of C. Lynch and R. Archibald began to assert themselves and they led the attempts to score the much needed goal. The Kilkeel full back line held out and their long clearances put pressure on the Dungiven defence. The half back line of A. Mc Cormick, E. Mullan and C. Mc Ateer were equally dominant and their aerial blocking was of the highest standard. Any Kilkeel attack which passed this line was met by A. Carlin, L. Mc Closkey and player of the match and captain from Dungiven, Geraldine Mc Closkey. First to the ball and showing exceptional touch and skill she cleared the ball time and time again.

Neither team scored for 22 minutes of the second half. At this stage Dungiven brought on B. Mc Callion and threw all forward to get the scores needed. Kilkeel placed a three player wall in front of their goal which Dungiven could not break down. Gaps appeared in the defence and Kilkeel notched up a goal and 2 points in the last 5 minutes to seal victory.

Dungiven can be proud of their achievements as all but one of the team will be available next year.
