Northern Ireland Curriculum

Learning for Life and Work is at the centre of the Northern Ireland Curriculum. It is made up of three components: Citizenship and Globalisation, Employability and Personal Social and Health Education. At present two of these options are taught in both Years 8 and 9 in KS3, namely, Employability and Citizenship. Citizenship is also taught in Year 10. Citizenship lessons focus on a range of skills such as knowledge and understanding of Human rights both at home and around the world. It also teaches students how they can be better citizens and how they fit in to the environment they live.

Employability teaches students about how they have a role to play in becoming an employee, how to market themselves and what skills and capabilities employers are looking for. PSHE looks at personal health and social problems such as alcohol, drugs and smoking. It also teaches students to manage their budget and how to relate better to the people around them.

At GCSE Learning for Life and Work which contains the three areas mentioned above. It continues the themes explored at KS3. Students follow the CEA syllabus. There are three exam modules which are sat in January and May, each is worth 15%. There are three pieces of course work: a discussion activity and a presentation worth 20% and an Action project which is worth 35%. Learning for Life and Work is compulsory for all students at GCSE.
