St. Patricks College: Curriculum

In accordance with the requirements of the E.R.(N.I.) Order, 1989 the programmes of study in English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, P.E., Technology and Design, Music, Home Economics, Business Studies, Business Systems, Social and Environment Studies and Religious Education are being delivered to the appropriate groups of pupils. The cross-curricular themes of Information Technology. Economic Awareness, Health Education, Careers Education, Education for Mutual Understanding and Cultural Heritage are being delivered in the context of the programmes of study. To reflect changes in the curriculum in terms of emphasis on literacy, special needs and I.T, the curriculum is in the process of being redefined. The policy is reviewed annually to take account of statutory obligations and in response to pupils need.

The KS4 curriculum is designed to meet the examination needs of pupils. Flexibility has been built into the KS4 curriculum, taking advantage of the disapplication programme offered by the Department of education. This facility allows some pupils to disapply from some subjects and to avail of a vocational link with the local College of Further education in work related learning and skill development. The programme also includes an element of work experience on a weekly basis.

St. Patrick's College, in partnership with the Youth Service operates a programme entitled XL, whereby youth tutors work with year 11 pupils on the Prince's Trust award scheme. The programme is supported by Mr McCartney and 2 other tutors.

At Keystage 4 External examinations are offered at GCSE, Welsh Board, and NVQ equivalency levels.

From 2003 Post 16 AVCE will operate with Health & Social Care and ICT, giving pupils opportunity to take post 16 examinations. Thereafter AVCEs will be offered in a range of subject areas, such as Leisure & Recreation, Travel & Tourism, Art & Design, Business, Science.
